Let's talk MUSIC again! Featured instrument: Cello

by Maceo D. Trahan

Recently, +Chris Brogan shared his favorite cellist. Here's my favorite cellist +Adam Hurst . I love this song "First Light". Has such a beautiful airy quality. Superb! Check it out

Found Adam playing great music at #SeattleCenter and was immediately blown-away. Adam's style is definitely dark and melodic. Great solo  #cello  pieces and duets with #piano  .
Check him out!

Google Trends dishes on which company is on top in mobile via search

by +Maceo Trahan

All data are property of Google. All analysis is done for fun and learning.

Looking at the trend info from Google we can put aside many of the prejudices that come with fan-boyism and look at the worldwide data to understand a little more clearly what the world, in general, thinks of when considering each company.

We'll be looking at five companies with strong presence in mobile:
Apple, HTC, LG, Samsung and Sony.

Here is the general graph of the five companies compared in search strength (i.e. Interest) since 2004:

First up is Apple (represented by the blue line)
If you follow mobile media it would seem that Apple is mostly known for selling iPhones and iPads. This appears to be only recently the case most recently.

Trend
In terms of graph knowledge we can see that Apple is trending upwards and has grown to nearly double in searches since 2004. Upward spikes in the trend for Apple seem to be highly driven by media coverage and by product release dates (not shown for clarity).

Search Strength
Most interesting is the fact that far and away the search term "apple store" is the leading term over the 2004-2013 period. Suggesting that most Google searches are people wanting to browse or spend money with Apple. A good position to be in for any company!

Also, notable is that Mac, iPod and Apple TV appear considerable higher in search than both the terms iPad and iPhone.

Related Terms: Apple

Next up is LG (represented by the red line)
LG appears to globally known for it's display technology with DVD and cellular and Optimus following well behind. It seems LG is popular in Cuba, South Korea, South America and Eastern Europe.

Trend
LG is trending flat to down. Nothing really exciting. Apparently, being the most recent builder of the Nexus line isn't making a huge impact in LG's popularity based on global searches. There are little to no spikes worth notice. Search for LG is a dead zone.

Related Terms: LG

Next up is HTC (represented by the gold line)
HTC seems to share the same fate as LG yet with a smaller variety of products to support global interest in Google searches.

Trend
Little to no search spikes of notice even if you limit search results to 2013 (sorry HTC One fans).
HTC is a search dead zone (except for Taiwan and the middle east). Based upon searches HTC is what it is: a mobile device manufacturer. Perhaps, ironing-out management difficulties or producing more than just phones will increase HTC's brand strength, at least in terms of search.

Related Terms: HTC

Next up is Samsung (represented by the green line)
Samsung, like Apple, is a strong brand in terms of search.

Trend
Apparently, the Galaxy Nexus release sky-rocketed Samsung well above all other competitors with Apple remaining a close second. The trend is strongly up over double and is up-trending stronger than Apple.

Search Strength
Despite manufacturing more items than mobile devices Samsung is now globally known for making Galaxy devices. In search terms you can also see that the term "android" is a common related search phrase.

Related Terms: Samsung

Whether you like it or not, since the Galaxy Nexus, globally speaking Samsung means android.

Last is Sony (represented by the purple line)
Like Samsung, Sony manufactures much more than mobile devices.

Trend
Sony is in a serious downtrend from an incredible high in 2004 which dwarfed even Apple. Apple was able to overtake Sony in general search March 2011 presumably with the news of the iPad 2. Search trends are clearly down for Sony and is a clear sign of trouble with global interest.

Search Strength
While BRAVIA, Playstation and Sony Music are long standing brands for Sony they rank fairly low on the search strength. The VAIO team should be commended for ranking strongly in association with Sony against the BRAVIA and Playstation terms.

Related Terms: Sony

Also mentioned...
So I don't receive the scorn of anyone brave enough to read this far, for greater scope, I have included a quick chart of Motorola, Nokia and Blackberry against Apple and Samsung.

Comment
Nokia: Down-trending with no recent search spikes
Motorola: Heavily down-trending with no search spikes beyond 2007 [ insert sad face]
Blackberry: Showed something of a pulse after 2009 but has since been trending down after late 2011 perhaps due to Samsung Galaxy Nexus release.
Microsoft: Very similar to Sony (above). Heavy down-trending. Not known for mobile and it shows in search strength.

Today I felt like I heard music for the first time, again.

Today I got a chance to hear some truly unbelievable headphones today at the Sony Style store. Popped the jack into my phone and BOOM! I heard sounds that were totally hidden before today.

I stood mesmerized by sounds I hadn't previously heard before. The growl and wobble of the bass strings on stand-up bass at the beginning of So What from Kind of Blue. Radiohead's 15 Steps was incredibly dynamic and airy. Beethoven's Piano Concerto No.3 felt live and impactful.  Marvin Gaye sounded like a true bard of the 70's.

Today I felt like I heard music for the first time, again.

I also listened to the Sony X05 series headphones today but at the same $199 price, after a recent price drop, the X10 series (or just X) are unmistakably superior.

The X05 had great sound but the bass was punchy and made my cranium wobble. The X offered rich, warm bass that didn't feel jacked up to compensate for other missing clarity.

While I didn't buy these headphones today I know it won't be long until I get my own pair. The hardest decision will be whether to get the Silver/Black combo or the Silver/Red combo.

The Sony X headphones are unreal.

Clever Windows Phone ad makes a classic marketing blunder

The new Windows Phone Nokia Lumia 920 ad was definitely entertaining. If you haven't watched it yet, go ahead give it a view

Basically, The scenario is a wedding where the bride's camp and the groom's camp fight during the wedding because each camp supports Android while the other supports iOS. Popularly marketed features become weapons of war as family members duke it out while ignoring the beautiful moment taking place.

A for effort. F for growing a market. Why?

The main problem with the argument that 'the other guys' are being ridiculous with their almost bi-partisan mobile phone war is that that's what we love about great products.
We love to route for our favorite things. We love connecting with products, joining a camp or a team so much that we will fight or at least are willing to fight and defend products we love the most.

If anything this ad shows that Microsoft has clearly forgotten or had no clue what makes people's wallet open and hearts beat. But obviously someone at Microsoft does understand because: Windows, Zune, Xbox. Perhaps the Xbox 360 team should give the Windows Phone team some pointers on marketing and advertising.

Interestingly, the ad finishes with the unspoken realization of the ad's own shortcomings.

One waiter turns to the other asking " You think if they knew about the Nokia Lumia they'd stop fighting all the time?"

The other replies : I don't know. I think they kind of like fighting."

-Yes, we do. Yes, we do.

Other marketing problems revealed in this ad:
  • Why show your competitors' product features which your product may not have?
  • Why tell new customers and potential switchers that all the excitement in the smartphone arena is happening somewhere else?
  • Why not give the viewers a reason to fight or what you have instead?

Android Single Screen Design

by Maceo D. Trahan

Hey, guys.

Just thought I'd show you my new home screen.
This is a simple home screen, which I really like to do. This home screen is just driven by the very nice wallpaper. I no longer use multiple home screens. In my opinion, multiple home screens are a hold over from iOS and other older mobile operating systems. Really, when I am using my smartphone I never think "Wow! I really am glad I can get to every app I have by just swiping."

I've just been enjoying my smartphone much more with less staring at me. The decision-paralysis and disorientation that comes from having all these apps all over the place.

One screen to rule them all

So, here's the dissection as I like to call it. Very simple. Just the default GO Wallpaper background, One More Clock Widget Free (Super awesome - great clock widget app. Dozens and dozens of clock styles), and of course Nova Launcher to control the number of home screens, remove the app dock/drawer and decrease app icon size.

Ooops! Just realized I forgot to mark-up the MetroStation Icon Pack. Good thing I included the text description, which I was going to skip this time.

That's all for now. Thanx for following along. Hope you have a great day.
See you next time!

Wide variety of video game music growing on Google Play from Castlevania to Final Fantasy

by Maceo D. Trahan

If you're anything like me, you are a fan of video games and video game music. While I still love the genius of 8-bit music in classic games, I've grown to appreciate the richness and depth that only modern music can offer.

If you're familiar with the iTunes then you may be familiar with the large number of game albums available for sampling and purchase. Moving to Android has been a great thing but I still long for the full service of iTunes. While Google Play Music is getting to be somewhat close to iTunes it lacks a very simple upgrade that would make it really great: an music player/CD importer. Putting that aside Google Play is good enough if you're frequently online and have uploaded a lot of music and are OK with streaming content. Of course, if you're using an Android device you can save to the device or stream your music via the Google Play Music app.

As Google Play has grown it's really added a lot behind the scenes. Early on it seemed as though a lot of artists were not available and if you were looking for something off the beaten track (pardon the pun) like video game music, you had no idea what was there or even if it was there, at all.

Luckily, the Google Play team has been adding more albums and really expanding the music catalog into something far more respectable and comparable to what you may be used to with other online music services. I haven't been particularly blown away with any music in terms of where obscurity or exclusivity is concerned, but I had found a few gems from time to time. And while I certainly don't spend as much on music as I did when I used iTunes I still tend do look for things out of the ordinary because the music library is vastly growing.

So, yesterday had a pleasant surprise as I was looking for new things in Google Play and I got a suggestion that I might like a video game album. I jumped right in and although I wasn't immediately sold, but the related titles were far more what I was after.

If you're new to Google Play Music you should consider taking the tour.

Now, there's all kinds of goodies inside of Google Play Music (can that name be any longer?) and I found some big name game soundtracks and composers as well as some unknowns.
One of the most loved composers in game soundtracks is Nobuo Uematsu. His beloved melodies have delighted gamers for literally decades.
I was very happy to see Uematsu's collection in Google Play. Of course, many of these tracks I have already bought, there are still some I haven't like the soundtrack to XBOX 360 exclusive Blue Dragon.

When I started this adventure, I found music from a game series I don't really enjoy playing but love listening to when I can. I'm talking about Castlevania. Deep dark, gothic and great. Yes, Castlevania is in Google Play.

Street Fighter is in Google Play. In fact, Dance Dance Revolution, Forza, Darksiders, Lineage, Halo, Final Fantasy, MassEffect, Hitman, Warhammer, Fable, Command and Conquer, World of Warcraft, Silent Hill... well, you get the idea.

There are so many video game titles in here, I don't think I'll ever be able to listen to them all.
I am a video game music junkie and I think I may have found a new reason to get back into more music consumption. I expect more recommendations from Google Play like these as I'm finding more and more appealing.

Now, the more perceptive of you may have noticed in the photo above is not a video game soundtrack, but a soundtrack from anime. Yes, anime music is also in Google Play.

This is getting good and I like it!

Anyone confused by some of the screenshots I've including can be assured that these are full albums and soundtracks and scores not just a theme track. There are video game music collections, as well, for those who need a reminder or just want more variety than focus. The most popular of which is probably the eclectic collection simply named "Video Games Live, Vol. One". If you're somewhat new to video game music and just want a nice sample, this is the place to start.

Pricing seems very reasonable at about 7.99~9.99 USD per album and as expected each song can be downloaded individually. I couldn't find a category for this wonderful genre of music and I really wish some of the game geeks at Google (there have to be a few, right?) take a stand and influence their peers.
It's a little annoying to have to play the search game when you want to know to just explore, but that's just how it is, for now. Who knows? Maybe one day video game music will have it's own category inside the soundtracks section and maybe it will be featured or gasp! even have some free songs, now and again.

Overall, this may not be the iTunes experience you're used or if you find yourself outside of the Apple ecosphere, for whatever reason, now you know that there's at least one more place you can go to get great video game music to enjoy other than YouTube.

Well, I hope you find some music you enjoy in Google Play Music.
Thanks for reading and see you next time!

Who would have guessed it? PS3 Youtube App updated and now works great... finally

by Maceo D. Trahan

If you're like me, you love you some PS3 and you love you Youtube. So, when YouTube announced the app for PS3 it was like BINGO! Awesome!! Except for one tiny little thing. The app was crap. Howso?
LAGGY and Stu-tt-ttt-ttering sound.

This was the worst app I had ever seen on PS3.
I mean Google, Youtube, Software.... WTH!
I mean Google knows software right? DAFUQ?! The WORST app I had ever used on PS3. I mean companies I had never heard of were making better apps on PS3 and YouTube couldn't get it done??
I was like SELL GOOGLE (GOOG)!!!!

The update before this last one actually crashed my system DURING the update every.. time...

Anyway, the good news is recently the YouTube app had another update and it's doesn't laggg.g...gg...gggg..gg like crazy anymore. In fact, I haven't seen one lag whatsoever. I've actually been *gasp* enjoying the app and leaving it on while I game on PC.

So, if you've been a little shy or resistant to using your PS3 for YouTube, fear no more. It's now the great app you wished it would be and it's a joy to use.

Talk to you next time!

Twilight X Potter?

by Maceo D. Trahan

Happy Valentine's!

Just got back from watching Beautiful Creatures. Despite its Twilight X Potter appearance, Beautiful Creatures was a pretty good movie. Well paced. Didn't wander. Stayed focused and generally was pleasant both visually and intellectually. Sorry, no vampires, werewolves or male strippers to be seen here, folks.

PHEW!!

I have to admit, one of the only reasons I was willing to see this is because I am a fan of Jeremy Irons. I would go so far as to say I wouldn't have even bothered with it if he wasn't in it. And for fans of Irons I can gladly tell you, YES, he is in it! By that I mean he's in it enough for you to enjoy seeing what he does best. They gave him great costumes. I loved his long coats. I wish I had more long coats.

Emma Thompson was wonderful and got to enjoy her roll probably a bit more than anyone else. Near the end, she looked very lovely and I felt I wanted to kiss her beautifully tanned neck as they kept her shots tight and close (so we could see she wasn't all wrinkly and withered I guess).

I won't go into any spoiler type ramblings here because I hate it when people reveal too much of a story or give away endings. But I will say that while this plot is about as predictable as any other romantic film you've seen, it's a pleasure to watch and amply rewards you for your patience. For instance: the church scene. Irons and Thompson do a terrific job of battling for supremacy on film and well I won't say anything more about it.

There weren't many good one-liners or any slapstick shots but the movie somehow remained a little fun despite the darker tone. Maybe I'm just feeling a little more emo than normal...

Anyway, the acting is sharp. The effects are good quality. The young stars did a good job. I detected a hint of real romance in some of the more steamy scenes, but maybe they got some good tips from the veterans.

There's a terrific bedroom scene in which no one takes their clothes off!! I won't ruin it for you. It's great!! You'll know it when you see it.

On the other hand, I couldn't shake the feeling there would be some racial references that would be awkward but that demon stayed in Pandora's Box despite the story being set in South Carolina.

Overall, I'd give this movie a solid B+ on an A thru F and I'd say it's worth watching if you can stomach believable romance. It's easily a date movie but not teen-romance-movie drivel. Good heart-felt and dark soft-rock soundtrack. Surprisingly modern but never strays too far from the tasteful instrumentations of the magical score.

Conclusion
A great diversion from the usual low-brow, pot-headed, overly dramatic bullshit that you find in movie theaters these days.

A Man Walks Into A Bookstore

by Maceo D. Trahan

In Half Price books in Bellevue. Time after time, I often see DVDs that I want to buy in the used video section.

The problem is every time I see something I want to buy, I remember that I'd previously seen that title on Netflix.

Netflix has made me not want to buy DVDS anymore.
Has anyone else had this feeling?

For a mere 9.99/mo Netflix has monopolized my video consumption, in total. Now, rarely I do buy Blu-Rays but as I said, it's rare.

Has Netflix taken over my video consumption or has my love of video been expounded upon and nurtured due to it's ease of discovery, consistent service and supply?
Or has Netflix help to cultivate the miser in me? Am I just happy with what's available or is Netflix just that great of a service?

Dissecting the Customization

by Maceo D. Trahan

Samsung Galaxy SII (AT&T)
  • Removed the notification bar to keep a unified appearance.
  • Reduced icon sizes and made the grid size 10 x 5
  • Added Power Toggles widget, customized it to Music Player settings.
  • Removed app drawer as this is a one page desktop layout. Fell in love with this simple trick [thanx to MKBHD ]
  • Customized app icons: Metrostation
As mentioned on the previous post, I couldn't find a way to remove the app label icons. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If you like this feel free to follow and subscribe. Thanx!
